We’re delighted to welcome veteran foreign correspondent John Simpson CBE, who’ll be discussing his novel ‘Our Friends in Beijing’ and the latest exploits of his fictional alter-ego, broadcaster and journalist Jon Swift with Tom Cargill, CEO of Wilton Park. Tom was previously the CEO of British Expertise International and is currently the Chair of the not-for-profit British Foreign Policy Group and spent 10 years at Chatham House.
With over 40 years' experience in international journalism John Simpson has dodged the bullets in Tiananmen Square, danced on top of the Berlin Wall, and was on hand for the revolutions in Czechoslovakia and Romania. He stood alongside Boris Yeltsin during the KGB coup which brought down the Soviet Union, and was the first Western journalist to penetrate the KGB headquarters in Moscow. John has reported from 140 countries, interviewed around 200 world leaders, and has covered forty-six wars on four continents. John's novel - a fast paced and revelatory thriller, follows on from his critically acclaimed Moscow Midnight, also featuring journalist Jon Swift. After his interview John will sign copies of this and his other books which will be available to purchase on the night.
