To celebrate the recent publication of the beautiful book John Piper's Brighton Aquatints, by Mainstone Press, art and architectural historian Professor Alan Powers will be talking about Piper's inspiration and about his links with a groundbreaking group of artists and architects working in Sussex during the 1930's and 40's The group revolved around the artist Peggy Angus in her cottage, Furlongs, on the South Downs. They included her husband, architectural writer J. M. Richards, their friend the artist Eric Ravilious, and the Russian-born architect Serge Chermayeff. Alan will chart the interactions between this powerful group of opinion-formers, all still under the age of 40 at the time.
