We are all familiar with ‘The Devil wears Prada’ but far few of us know that Alison Settle, a Steyning resident was also an editor of Vogue. Alison Settle OBE was a pioneering female journalist. When she began work in 1916 she was one of the very few female reporters on Fleet Street. Within 10 years she was editor of Vogue and was living a glamourous lifestyle, full of parties and high-end fashion. But behind the scenes, Alison was a widowed mother and “hankered after Sussex”. Arriving in Steyning in 1939, she would make the town her home for nearly 40 years. Dr Emma Bastin is a well-known historian of social and cultural history. Her talk will reveal some of the fascinating stories from Alison’s life which have been uncovered during her research for a new biography.
Thanks to the Gluck Studio for opening for this festival in celebration of the extraordinary Alison Settle.
